Social Media and Recruitment Taboo!

Today's post will focus on the use of tedious recruitment agencies and social media in order to secure professional roles. As a university student, I found it extremely boring applying for roles over and over again answering the same slightly differently worded questions by copying and pasting paragraphs from previous applications. I may have even had a beer in hand I don't know I can not remember.

A Tweetin' coincidence

The hours spent agonisingly bending to the will of the job world was starting to p*ss me off when remarkably during a quick twitter rant I came across a re tweet from a fellow tweeter I had followed through certain regional networking promotions on the site.(@EllisHollie I must give you credit for this!) The re tweet was from a small accountancy practice based in cramlington, and was looking for a university graduate to undertake ACCA exams.

After a few emails back and forth and exchanges of CV's with the partner, I had managed to secure myself an interview with the firm! Following a successful interview I was given a further one week trial to show them what I was capable of! This is where you really need to up your game, and become as adaptable as ever, chances are if you click with current employees from the get go, you're pretty much in good stand to nail the position! Be bold, charismatic and distinguish yourself from the rest.

If you're right for the team then say no more! This just goes to show the power of social media, remember to remain decent, connect with other people and share your experiences. You never know who could see you! Interact, don't ignore, don't pay attention to your following/follower ratio you egotistical f*ckers. Just meet exciting people, promote each other and build networks.

Developing further on the concept of social media, i'd like to reiterate one key platform which has elevated my profile within job searching and career building, LinkedIn. Now at first, I was very sceptical about what LinkedIn could offer me as a graduate, but tied in along with excellent recruiters, LinkedIn has essentially secured a good number of interviews that would have never otherwise materialised. The more time you invest into your LinkedIn profile, the more you gain. Spare no second delving into detail about your current responsibilities, your passions, your ideas and your goals as well as giving yourself a unique, yet professional image. Recruitment agencies then do all of the hard work for you by searching potential clients through LinkedIn's platform, so the more you put in, the more you stand out.

Once you've managed to be approached by a recruiter, it is imperative that you both understand each others limits. The chances are you've exaggerated slightly on your experiences and the recruiter isn't a miracle worker so get on the same page, be completely honest with each other, and with all that being done I'm sure the recruiter will naturally assist you more in securing a position than their usual candidates! Remember to always give your recruiter the latest versions of your CV and regularly check in with them via email, phone and LinkedIn to keep an established relationship! There's also no harm in registering with a few recruitment agencies, but too many might lead to multiple versions of your CV going to the same companies looking to recruit and will have wasted a lot of peoples time and effort. Research your desired field and maybe post on LinkedIn asking for advice on who are the leading agencies in your area for what you are looking to pursue!

Like I said before, utilise your online presence on every social media platform you can, be individual but be decent, be fun, and look like someone who'd be a perfect colleague. Also, be happy for others, promote other people as you never know who could turn around and hand you a perfect opportunity. Networking is a key tool within business hence the term it's not what you know its who you know! Happy job hunting and all the best in your future careers!

Signing off…

P.S It's always nice to send your recruiter a little gift! After all, they've practically put you in your dream job, its the least you can do!
